Why does silver tarnish?

Why Sterling Silver Tarnishes

Why Sterling Silver Tarnishes and How to Prevent It

Sterling silver is admired for its timeless shine and versatility. But unlike gold, sterling silver can tarnish and darken over time. This is a normal reaction that happens because sterling silver is not pure silver but an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper.

Why Sterling Silver Tarnishes

Sulfur in the Air
The primary cause of tarnish is a chemical reaction between silver and sulfur compounds in the air. This reaction creates silver sulfide, the dark film that dulls the metal’s surface.

Copper Oxidation
Since sterling silver contains copper, it can also oxidize when exposed to air and moisture. This oxidation can add to tarnish and sometimes create a greenish tint, especially on pieces that are worn daily.

Moisture and Humidity
Humid environments accelerate tarnish because moisture helps sulfur and oxygen react more quickly with sterling silver.

Skin Oils and Chemicals
Everyday wear also plays a role. Natural oils, sweat, lotions, and perfumes leave residues that trap sulfur and speed up tarnishing. Swimming pools and hot tubs are especially harsh on sterling because chlorine reacts aggressively with the metal.

How to Prevent Tarnish

You cannot stop tarnish completely, but you can slow it down:

  • Store sterling silver in a dry, airtight pouch or anti tarnish bag.

  • Keep it away from rubber, wool, and latex, which contain sulfur.

  • Wipe jewelry with a soft cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat.

  • Avoid swimming, bathing, or cleaning with sterling jewelry on.

  • Put on sterling jewelry last, after applying lotion, sunscreen, or perfume.

  • Clean tarnish when needed using Tarn X, a silver polishing cloth, or the aluminum foil method.

Keeping Sterling Silver Beautiful

Tarnish is a natural part of owning sterling silver, but it does not damage the metal. With proper storage, mindful wear, and occasional cleaning, your sterling silver jewelry will keep its shine and beauty for years to come.
